Since plaque hardens into tartar, an electrical tool is used to loosen and remove tartar during GDC. A prophylaxis cleaning is performed afterward to further clean the teeth.

Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning is a dental cleaning designed to treat gum disease which, if not effectively treated, is progressive and will worsen. Unlike a normal, preventative cleaning, this treatment involves scaling and root planing. This is necessary to remove excess plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and deep in between the gums. A Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning is for patients diagnosed with periodontal disease.
